The devastating earthquake, which struck the Yogyakarta region on May 27th, was a big tragedy for us. Many of our staff, agents and business partners have lost their homes or have seen their houses damaged.
Besides Indonesia, we have received generous donations from Allianz Malaysia and Allianz China & Taiwan, where many employees and agencies donated generously. Many other employees and agencies from other Allianz companies in Asia contributed to the special account, which was set up by Allianz Asia Pacific in Singapore.
Donations were given for first aid and financial support to rebuild houses of our employees, agencies and families. All funds donated were entirely used for 18 employees, agents and their families from Allianz Utama Indonesia and Allianz Life Indonesia, who were affected by the earthquake.
A special committee from both Allianz companies in Indonesia was set up immediately after the disaster and has arranged and initiated the following immediate actions:
- Two trucks were hired from Semarang to deliver immediate aid, such as tents, water, food, clothes, medicine, gasoline, etc to our people in Yogyakarta area.
- Semarang, the city nearest to Yogyakarta, where Allianz has a bigger operation was used as the base camp. Employees and agents from Semarang and Yogyakarta acted as volunteers and worked many extra hours to help.
- A temporary Allianz office was set up after our Allianz office in Yogyakarta was damaged and could not be used. It is now under renovation.
- An Allianz team conducted a survey on all damaged houses of our colleagues, agents, and their families and disbursed aid to repair or rebuild houses.
We have spent a total of USD 17.000 for all these initiatives (excluding the expenses for our Allianz office re-arrangement and renovation). We are glad to say that this amount could be funded through donations from employees, agents, and business partners, from many Allianz operations around Asia, as well as through some corporate donations, for which we are very grateful.
